Trauma

It’s as though something separates you from everyone else. Some barrier that you can’t see but is always there.

Breaking the Invisible Barrier to Connection and Healing

You watch other people go about their days, connect with each other, and get through life with such ease. Meanwhile, you’re struggling all the time. “What’s wrong with me?” you wonder. “Why is life so unfair?” A deep anger is growing inside you, and you’ve begun resenting all the people who have it so easy.

It comes out in unpredictable ways – arguing with coworkers and yelling at your children. You know something needs to change. You can’t struggle like this alone any longer. But you’re not sure where to turn. This is where Perimeter Treatment Center steps in. PTx offers group support focused on sharing healing and creating community for those who have experienced trauma.

There is an important difference between trauma-informed care and trauma therapy — and understanding this distinction matters.

Treating the Root, Not Just the Symptoms

Perimeter Treatment Center is different. We are not just a psychiatric, treatment facility. We specifically deal with trauma. Do we deal with depression, addiction, and anxiety? Absolutely, yes; however we do so with the perspective that depression, addiction, and anxiety are symptoms of experienced trauma and issues related to insecure attachment as a child, adolescent, and young adult. The traumatic event was unable to be fully processed, as there was not a safe foundation upon which to cope.

How we do it

Our team is able to delve into our patients’ past and identify portions of emotional and psychological development that may be incomplete or missing altogether. We talk through our past and current situations, looking to uncover patterns and repeated needs and/or issues. In doing so, we are able to see what exactly is motivating each individual. Here is the tricky part, all of this is at the subconscious level.

We are connecting dots that may have never been connected before. It is common for our staff to clearly see how there is a repeating pattern withing someone’s life and yet they may have never made the connection before. When that pattern is identified, it is almost an immediate “ah-ha” moment for the client. Both the client and the clinician report that this subconscious process never ceases to amaze them.

What do we use

We use many techniques that are frequently used within most treatment centers, however we ‘add a little spice’ to our program. We use things such as meditation and mindfulness, like so may other DBT and CBT programs. However we use them to replace maladaptive coping strategies and habits. In doing so, we are able to keep our clients regulated while they discover and begin to understand their internal triggers, as well as their motivations. Once these are realized, we help our clients to tackle the “why.” Why are they doing this, what is it that motivates them, what was missing to cause this to be such a huge issue, to the point that they are not fully able to be happy (or even function fully, in some cases).

Once this is uncovered, we apply EMDR (a radical and highly effective method of ‘breaking up’ unprocessed trauma into ‘bite-sized chunks.’ In doing so, the client and their brain is able to process and FEEL unresolved trauma safely. The client finds that the trauma is not ‘too much’ and that they are not overwhelmed, as they often fear. This once massive ‘ball’ of unresolved pain suddenly becomes manageable and able to be released, once and for all.

Who is our typical client

First, our clients are almost always stabilized. They are usually able to function in the real world. They may have jobs and/or careers, however they struggle with interpersonal relationships. Often, they are in states of constant turmoil. They are frustrated looking at ‘everyone else’ who appears to be happy and enjoying life. They may have explosions from time to time or find themselves ‘lashing out’ without control. They may find themselves having a bit too much to drink or wishing they did not ‘smoke so much.’ At best, they feel confused at the intensity of their emotions, whether expressed or not, and the lack of happiness and joy in everyday life.

Who Are We

We are all trauma survivors as well. We went through our own trauma therapy and found that we were ‘not quite ‘fixed.’ Yes, we felt broken, even after therapy. We had some good tools but felt off center. This caused us to engage in a rare, researched-based psychoanalytic therapy education which led to today. What we offer works. Based on the concept of connection and community, this program creates a wholistic approach into recovery and healing from unresolved trauma. Our team is known for saying, “I cannot make your trauma go away. I cannot erase your memories, however I can help you to learn how to live with them and to (hopefully) turn them into healing.”
